GOING VEGAS
Super Bowl bops sports books

By Anthony Curtis

The New York Giants' win over the New England Patriots may not have been the biggest upset of Super Bowl XLII. Official numbers confirm that the Nevada sports books lost a collective $2.5 million on the game, due mostly to bettors backing the Giants at odds of about 3.5-1. The loss ends a run of 12 consecutive years of wins for the books and is only the second time in 18 years of keeping records that the bettors prevailed. The $92 million handle (amount wagered) was also a disappointment for the casinos: The expected $100 million mark not only wasn't broken, but the total fell $1 million short of last year.

VOLCANO DORMANT: The Mirage volcano will remain dormant until further notice while it undergoes a major renovation. This is the second makeover for the volcano since it first erupted Nov. 22, 1989. In 1996, new water, fire, sound and lighting effects were added. Details on the new design will be released at a later date; the project is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

FIRE STARTER: It's been determined that last month's fire at the Monte Carlo casino-hotel was caused by flying molten metal from a hand-held cutting torch used by welders working on the roof. Though minor fire damage was sustained inside, the resort remains closed while the affected outside portions are repaired.

TOBY PIT: Harrah's has added a Toby Keith Party Pit in the casino to go along with the country star's restaurant. The Toby area, which is adjacent to Bill's Bar, features eight gaming tables and operates from noon to 4 a.m. daily.

LESS READING: The Reading Room bookstore at Mandalay Bay is closing. The novelty of selling novels in a casino wasn't enough to spare the independent bookseller from being purged in a revamp of the Mandalay Place Mall.

Q. Are there any good bargain breakfasts anymore?

A. The current best is two eggs, choice of bacon or sausage, hash browns, and toast for $1.49. It's available daily from midnight to 11 a.m. at four locations that have come to be known as the "Wild casinos": Wild Wild West, Wildfire, Gold Rush and Magic Star.
