DALLAS — SMU coach June Jones added most of his staff today, hiring a high school liaison with links to the championship days of two of Texas' storied programs.
Earlier, Jones announced that four former University of Hawaii coaches would join him.
They are Dan Morrison (assistant head coach/offense), Dennis McKnight (offensive line), Jeff Reinebold (receivers) and Wes Suan (running backs). They helped the Warriors go 12-0 and qualify for the Bowl Championship Series before losing to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.
Jones also hired Tam Hollingshead as director of high school relations. Hollingshead was the last coach to win a state championship at famed Texas high school power Odessa Permian, in 1991, three years after he was an assistant on the team chronicled in the book and movie "Friday Night Lights."
Hollingshead played for SMU in the 1970s after helping Brownwood win two of its seven state championships. He spent the past three years as head coach at Rockwall Heath and was the head coach at Temple and an assistant at Texas A&M.
"I said when I was hired that finding a strong staff would be of the utmost importance," Jones said. "I really feel like we've done that with these coaches."
On defense, Jones hired Tim Hundley as assistant head coach/defense and Tom Mason as defensive coordinator. Bert Hill will coach the defensive line and Derrick Odum will run the secondary.
Jones retained Randy Ross as director of football operations and Steve Stigall as director of on-campus recruiting.
