Community meetings scheduled to cover Native Hawaiian issues

A series of statewide community meetings will give residents a chance to discuss legislation that affects Native Hawaiians, including a settlement agreement on ceded land revenues with the state.
A number of the meetings are being held by the 'Ilio'ulaokalani Coalition, which will look not only at the ceded lands settlement proposal, but also bills and resolutions before the state Legislature having to do with a bio-prospecting study involving Native Hawaiian plants and cultural practices, kalo engineering and whether to have a Constitutional Convention.
The Office of Hawaiian Affairs is having its own series of community meetings, which will deal strictly with the ceded lands settlement.
Some of the meetings are being held jointly by 'Ilio'ulaokalani and OHA.
The meetings listed are jointly held unless noted:
Today, 6-9 p.m., Waimanalo Public & School Library.
Friday, 7 p.m., Pearl City High School Cultural Center Hall (OHA only).
Saturday, 10 a.m. -2 p.m., Ma'ili Elementary School.
Monday, 6-9 p.m., Kulana 'Oiwi Halau, Moloka'i.
Tuesday, 6-9 p.m., Lana'i Community Center, Lana'i ('Ilio'ulaokalani only).
Feb. 20, 7 p.m., Lihu'e Public Library (OHA only).
Feb. 23, 6 p.m., Maui Community College, Kalama Room 103 (OHA only).
Feb. 25, 6-9 p.m. Queen Lili'uokalani Children's Center, Hilo.
Feb. 26, 6-9 p.m., Waimea Community Center (next to Waimea Park), Big Island ('Ilio'ulaokalani only).
Additionally, OHA is holding an online meeting from 9 a.m. on Feb. 22. Go to www.oha.org/pastdue/ to participate.
Both OHA and 'Ilio'ulaokalani said they are finalizing details for more meetings statewide.
Also, Ka Lei Maile Ali'i Hawaiian Civic Club is holding an independent informational briefing Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Jarrett Middle School cafeteria in Palolo.
