The state found no additional cases of active tuberculosis disease as a result of contact with a Roosevelt High School student who was confirmed to have the disease in November, the state Department of Health said yesterday.
However, DOH's Tuberculosis Control Branch did find three students who tested positive for latent TB infection, which is not contagious.
All of those students were offered treatment, DOH officials said.
A student from Roosevelt High School diagnosed with active tuberculosis was the first reported case of the contagious disease in a public school student in at least eight years, Health Department officials said.
As a precaution, the state in December tested about 160 students and staff at Roosevelt who may have come in close contact with the student.
"Because the TB infection rate for those at Roosevelt High School who came in contact with the student who has active TB disease is lower than the TB infection rate found in a similar aged population throughout Hawai'i, this indicates that there was probably minimal to no transmission of TB at the school," Dr. Jessie Wing, chief of the TB Control Branch, said in a news release.
A second case of TB in public schools was reported last week after a Kahuku High and Intermediate School teacher had tested positive for TB after visiting a doctor because of an illness. Health officials are expected to test 106 people at Kahuku on Tuesday.
