The University Fitness Center, open to University of Hawai'i-Manoa faculty, staff and affiliated organizations, will begin implementing a membership program to help maintain and upgrade the popular workout area.
"The University Fitness Center membership fee is being implemented by the Campus Center Board to maintain the level of services provided by the University Fitness Center and to fairly share the cost of operating the fitness center among all users," said Sarah Yap, Campus Center director.
Currently, students are paying a fee that subsidizes operating and maintaining costs of this facility for all users.
"Because there are other users besides students, it is only fair that everyone who utilizes the facility share this cost," Yap said.
The University Fitness Center recently installed 11 new pieces of fitness equipment totaling $48,000. It also extended its normal hours of operation on weekdays.
Students who carry a valid UH ID already pay a fee and will continue to have access to the fitness center. Memberships will also be available for purchase for the following groups: UHM faculty and staff, employees of the affiliated organizations (UH Foundation, East-West Center and RCUH at Manoa), and UH System employees assigned to the Manoa campus.
This usage fee for the fitness center will take into effect on March 1 when only fee-paying members will be allowed access to the fitness center. Annual membership is $120 and monthly membership is $20. A semester membership will be available beginning this summer.
Memberships can be purchased via cash or credit card from the Campus Center Ticket, Information, and ID Office at Campus Center 212, starting Friday. Present your valid UH or affiliated ID at purchase.
The University Fitness Center is on the ground floor of the Stan Sheriff Center and is open from 6-7 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, 11:30 a.m.-9:30 p.m. Friday, and 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
