What are you most proud of? "For the past few years we were under a 'restructuring process,' " said Leighton Kawai, Kilohana Elementary School principal. "That did not deter us from remaining focused and reaching out for the goals set before us. With the strong support of the parents, students, faculty and staff, we've worked hard together as a team. I am glad to say that as of this school year, we were able to come out of restructuring. That has not stopped or slowed us down in our mission to value learning and to vault to grade-level standards or above."

What is your biggest challenge? "The budget," Kawai said. "Stretching the dollars and making sure that the students' and teachers' needs are being met from the little funds we have. Providing more planning time for the teachers without short-changing the students in any way."

Special events: Monthly "Just Because" Days, in which families interact with school staff and students; the Buddy System, where one adult at school is assigned to several students for the entire year; annual Spring Bazaar, Grandparents' Day celebration, Volunteers Appreciation Day, Pa'ahana and Eleu Awards to students, Munch and Mingle for Parents and School Staff and May Day, Christmas program and graduation.

History: The school, nestled near the foothills of 'Ualapu'e, Moloka'i, began as another school built 173 years ago. The school bore the name Kalua'aha for more than 100 years until the students attending were transferred to what was the 'Ualapu'e Hospital, renamed Kilohana Elementary School, in 1935. Kilohana means "look out" in Hawaiian because the school has a good view of the ocean between Maui and Moloka'i. Much of the original school building still resembles a hospital. In 1976, an eight-classroom building was built

Well-known alumni: Kauai Cockett, Melveen Leed, Moana and Raquel Dudoit, who are kumu hula for Moana's hula halau.
