HILO, Hawaii — Big Island police are looking for a 38-year-old Puna man wanted for questioning in connection with a shooting in Puna's Orchidland subdivision Thursday night.
Steven Kaio of Orchidland is considered "a person of interest" in the shooting, and is considered armed and dangerous, police said.
Puna patrol officers were summoned to a home on 35th Avenue at about 7:30 p.m. and found a 51-year-old man who had been shot once in the head.
A fire rescue crew took the injured man to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition, and his condition was later upgraded to guarded, police said.
Police are treating the incident as an attempted murder case, and are searching for Kaio, who is related to the gunshot victim.
Kaio was last seen driving away from the home in a white 2006 Toyota Tundra with Hawai'i license plates HKE 078. He is 5-foot-7, weighs 250 to 300 pounds, and has brown eyes and short black hair.
Police said Kaio may pose a danger to himself, and urged the public not to approach him.
Police ask anyone with information about Kaio to call Detective Rio Amon-Wilkins at 808-961-2386 or the Police Department's nonemergency number at 808-935-3311.
