INZELL, Germany — American Shani Davis broke the track record today in winning his second 1,000 meter race in two days in World Cup speedskating.
The Olympic champion finished in 1 minute, 9.65 seconds — 0.39 seconds off his world record. Denny Morrison of Canada was second in 1:09.86, followed by Dutchman Jan Bos in 1:09.94.
The weekend wins almost wrapped up the season title for Davis. With two races left, he has 690 points to Morrison's 616.
Germany's Anni Friesinger also repeated her 1,000 win from Saturday, picking up her 54th World Cup victory in 1:16.45. Ireen Wust of the Netherlands was second in 1:17.95 and Canada's Shannon Rempel third in 1:18.41.
The commanding win for the German, who has won the season title, boosted her confidence ahead of the world championships in three weeks in Nagano, Japan.
"This was a dream weekend," Friesinger said. "The sun shone, the spectators were fantastic, I was in form — nothing much can go wrong before the worlds."
Jeremy Wotherspoon gained revenge on Japan's Joji Kato, who on Saturday handed the Canadian his only loss in the 500 in eight races. Wotherspoon won Sunday's 500 in 35.35, with Japan's Keiichiro Nagashima and Canada's Mike Ireland sharing second in 35.70.
Wotherspoon also regained the lead in the season standings with 780 points to 712 for South Korea's Lee Kang-seok.
Germany's Jenny Wolf, who has already captured the season title, won the women's 500 in 38.51. Annette Gerritsen of the Netherlands was second in 39.13, followed by Svetlana Kaykan of Russia with 39.31.
