A Puna man has been charged with assault and four weapons offenses in connection with a shooting in Orchidland subdivision on Valentine's Day, police said.

Steven Kaio, 38, of Orchidland, was charged Saturday with first-degree assault and use of a firearm in the offense. He was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail until his arraignment Tuesday.

The charges stem from a shooting Thursday at the home of a 51-year-old Hilo man. The man was shot in the head and remains in guarded condition at Hilo Medical Center, police said.
