Summer fun is in University of Hawai'i softball player Kate Robinson's plans.

Robinson yesterday was selected in the second round — 11th pick overall — by the Akron Racers in the National Pro Fastpitch draft.

She is the first Rainbow Wahine selected in the NPF's 5 1/2-year history, and only the second drafted by a professional league. Dana Degen was picked in the 2000 Women's Pro Softball League draft.

Robinson, who is a senior, cannot sign with Akron until after the Rainbows' 2008 season ends.

Robinson said each NPF team has a total payroll of $100,000, which must be split among the 16 to 20 players. She said each player usually earns between $3,000 and $5,000, but can receive performance bonuses.

She said the team pays for room, board and transportation.

"Pretty much your salary is yours," she said.

She said she views this opportunity as a "summer job, not a career."

Akron had sent a notice of inquiry to UH coach Bob Coolen last year. Akron officials contacted Robinson a month ago, asking if she would be willing to enter the draft.

At the time, she also received professional offers from softball teams in Illinois and Germany.

"It's kind of overwhelming to learn people actually pay attention to you," Robinson said.

She said she will choose Akron because the NPF is the more established league. Most of the marquee players, however, might not be available this summer because of the Olympics. This is the final time softball is scheduled to be an Olympic sport.

Robinson said Akron wants her to repeat her current role as pitcher/first baseman.

"It's actually perfect," Robinson said. "The season (will be played) over the summer."

Robinson said she plans to return to school for the fall semester. She is on track to earn a bachelor's degree in December.

After that, she would like to pursue a career in coaching.
