HAWAII BRIEFS
Police say crash victim a Marine

Advertiser Staff

A 22-year-old man killed in a fiery single-car crash Tuesday night on H-3 Freeway was a Marine stationed at Kane'ohe Bay, police said.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's Office and Marine Corps Base Hawai'i public affairs yesterday were not disclosing the man's name until his identity is confirmed and his family notified.

Police vehicular homicide investigators said speed was an apparent factor in the crash of the man's 1986 Chevrolet two-door car a half-mile west of the Mokapu Boulevard overpass.

The driver lost control of the car, which veered off the roadway and up a hillside, hit a tree and flipped over at 9:56 p.m.

The car burst into flames. Emergency personnel could not get the driver out of the car. There was no one else in the vehicle.

The death is O'ahu's seventh traffic fatality in 2008. There were 13 traffic deaths at this time last year.

The Hawai'i Theatre is providing use of the facility free of charge.

The event is set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public.

LIGHT BREEZES, COOL DAYS AHEAD

A low-pressure ridge will remain over the Islands all week, producing light winds, the National Weather Service said.

Nighttime land breezes will bring clear skies and cool temperatures, forecasters said.

Daytime sea breezes will produce some afternoon cloudiness but little rain.

The light winds will keep vog and pollution in the vicinity, resulting in hazy conditions.

A front is expected to reach the Islands on Sunday, bringing showers and clearing the air.

The forecast for today is for sunny skies, with a high near 79. Winds will be from the southeast at 9 to 11 mph, and shift to the southwest.

MILITARY HITTING BIG ISLAND ROADS

Marines and sailors from Marine Corps Base Hawai'i and Okinawa will be traveling in a convoy between Kawaihae and Pohakuloa Training Area on the Big Island through Monday. The activity began yesterday.

About 2,000 Marines and sailors will participate in a Hawai'i Combined Arms Exercise at Pohakuloa Training Area.

The Department of Army police at Pohakuloa are working closely with local authorities and military officials to coordinate this activity. Motorists are advised to drive with care and to allow extra travel time in case of traffic delays.

EVENING LAW PROGRAM SET

The William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa has received approval from the American Bar Association to begin an evening law program starting this fall, the university said.

The part-time program targets a class of 24 students to enter in the fall. In the normal course of study, a part-time student should expect to complete the first year of the regular JD curriculum in two years, and to graduate in five years, though this timeline will be flexible.
