Waiakea fought off foul trouble for its two standout Imai sisters and another scrappy effort by Maui last night for a 58-47 victory in the Hawaiian Air-lines/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Girls Division I Basketball Championship quarterfinals.

The No. 2 seed and Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Warriors improved to 14-0 in the regular and postseason and will face unseeded Interscholastic League of Honolulu runner-up 'Iolani (14-2) in tonight's semifinals.

Tipoff is set for 8 o'clock at Kaimuki High School gym.

No. 1 seed and ILH champ Punahou (12-1) will play unseeded O'ahu Interscholastic Association runner-up Radford (16-1) in the other semifinal at 8 p.m. at Farrington.

Maui, which lost two key players to injury in the MIL postseason tournament, scored a big first-round overtime upset over Farrington on Tuesday and overcame a 12-point first-period deficit to tie it 27-27 with 2:57 remaining in the half last night.

But Waiakea took a 31-29 lead on Kira De Morales' free throws with 21 seconds before the break and then opened the second half with a 10-0 run to go up 41-29 with 5:44 left in the third quarter.

The Sabers responded with a 12-4 spurt to close it to 45-41 with 7:38 remaining in the game, but would get no closer as the Warriors answered with an 11-1 run over the next six minutes to seal it.

"Every time we had the momentum, they took it right back," Maui coach Gilbert Silva said. "We started slow in the third quarter and we had three consecutive turnovers. And with a team like Waiakea, once they get a big lead they're going to spread it out and make you chase them."

Senior guard Kirsty Imai led the Warriors with 17 points and her sister, sophomore forward Kamie, added 15 points. But both fought through foul trouble, as Kamie picked up her third foul with 3:16 left in the half and Kirsty fouled out with 2:54 remaining in the game.

"(The foul trouble) forced us to go to a zone, which we don't like to do," Waiakea coach Grant Kauhi said. "Maui is a real scrappy team and their girls have big hearts. I told our girls that (the Sabers) will be fired up because they have nothing to lose."

Kamie Imai said the Warriors' unity was key in working through the foul trouble and Maui's threatening runs.

"We just had to work together and pick ourselves up," said Imai, a multi-talented open-court player. "We had confidence that we could do it if we worked together."

Jazmine Corpuz led the Sabers with a game-high 19 points.
