A 245-pound male Sumatran tiger walked out of its enclosure at the Honolulu Zoo yesterday and briefly roamed in an unsecured area.
The tiger, named Berani, wandered past a startled female volunteer, said Sidney A. Quintal, city director of Enterprise Services. The volunteer followed procedure by retreating and then securing another gate that kept the tiger from going any farther.
Zoo personnel were then able to coax Berani back into its enclosure, Quintal said.
No person or animal was harmed in the escape, which happened at 8:15 a.m., before the zoo's 9 a.m. opening.
"We were very fortunate, everything was in our favor," Quintal said, noting that 8-year-old Berani is the tamest of the three tigers in the exhibit.
Zoo administrators planned to review their animal holding procedures.
The breach was caused by human error, Quintal said. Staff cleaned the tiger enclosure in the morning but did not properly latch a gate, he said.
The zoo opened its new tiger enclosure Nov. 19.
