L.A. downs Sydney in Pan Pacific 3rd-place match

Associated Press

David Beckham and the Los Angeles Galaxy beat Sydney FC 2-1 Saturday night in the third-place match of the Pan-Pacific Championship exhibition tournament.

Gamba Osaka was set to face the Houston Dynamo later Saturday in the championship match at Aloha Stadium.

The Galaxy of Major League Soccer got first-half goals from Ely Allen and Josh Tudela to edge Sydney of Australias A-League.

L.A. struck first on a one-timer by Allen in the third minute. Beckham booted a long pass over the crowd from about 25 yards out and Allen put it past Sydney FC goalkeeper Ivan Neceveski.

Sydney FC tied it on a line-drive shot by Brendan Renaud in the 42nd minute. Renaud, a defender, blasted a left-footed shot from 30 yards out that whizzed past the outstretched arms of Galaxy goalkeeper Steve Cronin.

Tudelas goal just before halftime put L.A. back on top in the 45th minute. Beckham passed a ball across the 18-yard box, but Neceveski dove to deflect it. The rebound came off to Tudela, who easily put it away with his left foot from about eight yards out.

Sydney FC lost 3-0 Wednesday to the Houston Dynamo, the two-time defending MLS champion. L.A. rebounded from a 1-0 loss to Gamba Osaka.
