A whale calf that washed ashore today at Puamana Beach Park in Lahaina after being chased by two tiger sharks in the ocean died after being turned over to National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration officials, according to Maui police.

Capt. Charles Hirata, commander of the Maui Police Department's Lahaina District, said the whale calf appeared to have sustained multiple injuries. Beachgoers threw rocks at the sharks when they saw them approaching the whale calf.

The incident was reported at 10:05 a.m.
