History Channel to feature H-3 Freeway tomorrow

Advertiser Staff

O'ahu's own H-3 Freeway will be featured on the History Channel "Modern Marvels" at 6 and 10 p.m. tomorrow on Oceanic Cable 72 and digital Channel 327.

H-3 will be one of several road systems from around the world to be showcased.

The 16-mile freeway, open for 10 years as of last December, was built by the state Department of Transportation at a cost of $1.3 billion. It has two sets of tunnels, two long viaducts and 26 bridges. It is the largest public works project in Hawai'i history and was built by seven different contractors.

It was authorized by the U.S. Congress as part of the 1960 Statehood Act and is part of the H-1 and H-2 system that connects various military bases across the island.
