Parolee, 30, holds off Maui police, but gives up

A man involved in a 7 1/2-hour standoff with Maui police Monday night was being held yesterday at Maui Community Correctional Center on a retake warrant for parole violation, with additional charges pending.
Kadon Ioane Zimmerman, 30, surrendered to police at 12:15 a.m. yesterday, ending the standoff at the Harbor Lights apartment complex in Kahului which began at 4:45 p.m. Monday.
Zimmerman allegedly fired one shot during the incident but no injuries were reported.
Police evacuated about 100 residents from the apartment complex. Tour buses took them to War Memorial Gym, where they waited out the standoff.
According to Hawai'i Criminal Justice Data Center records, Zimmerman has 14 prior convictions, including felony family abuse.
Maui police spokesman Lt. Wallace Tom said Zimmerman was armed with a shotgun and pistol. Zimmerman surrendered the shotgun at 9:30 p.m. and the pistol at midnight before giving up to police, Tom said.
The standoff started at 4:45 p.m. when police tried to arrest Zimmerman on the parole revocation warrant. After spotting the officers, Zimmerman ran into an apartment in "D" building, armed himself and fired one round, police said.
