QUICK BITES
Say hey to powdered peanut butter

Powdered peanut butter sounds like something only a hiker could love. But PB2, as the new product from Tifton, Ga.-based Bell Plantation is called, isn't aimed just at the hiking set, and has real potential to win over the rest of us. PB2 is an ultrafine powder made by roasting and pressing peanuts, a process that removes much of the fat. While you can simply reconstitute PB2 with water, this isn't where the product shines. Instead, PB2 is perfect for tossing with warm oil or broth and hot noodles for a near-instant peanut sauce. It also can be used in baked goods, giving the luscious flavor of peanut to recipes such as banana bread and sugar cookies without adding too much fat. PB2 by Bell Plantation is available at www.bellplantation.com for $11.96 for four 6 1/2-ounce jars.

SPARKLING BUBBLIES

RESERVE EARLY FOR WINE TASTING

Just because New Year's Eve has passed doesn't mean the time for champagne tastings is done. Vino at Restaurant Row is planning a tasting with Terry Thiese, whom master sommelier and Vino partner Chuck Furuya describes as "America's foremost expert for and leading importer of fine German wines and our absolute favorite 'boutique,' artisan, 'grower' champagnes."

The event is 5:45 p.m. Jan. 22 and reservations are required. Included will be six wines — three champagnes and three German vintages. Furuya expects the $45 tasting to be sold out. Reservations: 533-4476.
