Taylor Mounts banked in a short putback as time expired last night to lift 'Iolani to a pulsating 43-41 victory over visiting Punahou before a raucous capacity crowd of about 1,050.

It was the Interscholastic League of Honolulu opener for the arch rivals, who have combined to win the past seven ILH championships.

With the score tied at 41-41, 'Iolani guard Kela Marciel penetrated and dished the ball to forward Pablo Warner, who put up an off-balance shot from about 12 feet out on the right side of the lane, in between three defenders. The shot went completely over the rim and bounced off the backboard into the hands of Mounts, who caught and released the ball as tenths of a second wound down on the scoreboard clock.

"This feels great, we've been waiting for this game ever since they beat us here in the ILH championship game last year," said Mounts, a 6-foot-5 senior center who finished with 14 points, six rebounds and one block. "We all know about this rivalry."

True to form, the game was intense and tight from the opening tip until Mounts' final basket.

Punahou jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but the Raiders responded with an 11-2 run to go up 11-6 after Lionel Fujioka's layup with 2:52 remaining in the period. The Buffanblu then scored six straight points to lead 12-11 early in the second quarter.

The teams traded baskets the rest of the half and entered the locker rooms with 'Iolani up, 21-19.

The Raiders used a 6-0 run to take a 27-21 lead early in the third period, but Punahou stormed back and closed it to 31-30 entering the fourth.

It remained tight throughout the final period, with freshman Trevyn Tulonghari sinking a 15-foot jumper to put 'Iolani up, 39-36, only to have Kameron Steinhoff answer with a 3-pointer from the corner to tie it with 3:10 left.

Warner gave the Raiders a 41-39 lead on a layup with 2:23 remaining, then Steinhoff scored on a layup to tie it with 49 seconds left.

'Iolani then maintained possession, calling two timeouts before starting the final wind-down at 18 seconds.

"They followed our directions," Raiders coach Mark Mugiishi said. "We wanted Kela to penetrate and dish, and then have everybody crash the boards so we have a chance for an offensive glass."

Buffanblu coach Dan Hale said his team's poor free-throw shooting (4 of 9) in the fourth quarter proved costly.

"We can't do that against 'Iolani," Hale said. "They're too good a team, and they'll make plays at the end like they did."
