KA'U
Volunteers needed to remove invasive grass

Advertiser Staff

Volunteers are invited to join the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park staff and others tomorrow in a project to remove invasive fountain grass from roadsides in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision in Ka'u.

Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. at the Ocean View Community Center and should bring lunch, water, a hat and sunscreen. Participants will learn about problems caused by invasive plants as well as ways to remove them.

Fountain grass is one of the few non-native species that colonizes young lava flows. It accumulates dead biomass and burns rapidly, fueling destructive wildfires such as the 2005 and 2007 Waikoloa fires.
