Computers on campus: 199 available to students in English, the library and vocational programs.

What are you most proud of? "Of the people that comprise the school — our students and staff of Kohala High School," principal Bratt said. "Our students carry themselves well and represent the school and community with honor. When visitors come to our school, the one thing that stands out for them is the conduct of our students."

What is your biggest challenge? "Our biggest challenge is how to continue to improve upon what we currently do," Bratt said. "Our students are our greatest asset, and the constant challenge is to build upon programs to ensure engaging and rigorous instruction for students in order to guarantee successful post-high school transitions."

Special events: Year-round athletic programs, speech competition, bonding activities, parent conference nights, awards assembly and professional development training.

History: Located on the northern tip of the Big Island, the school offers a small-town, small-school atmosphere. The school was established in 1936 as a kindergarten through 12th grade, but as the area grew, an elementary school was added in 1995 and a middle school in 2001.

Testing: Here's how Kohala High School students fared on the most recent standardized tests. (All scores are for 2006, the most recent year available.)

Stanford Achievement Test: Listed is the combined percentage of students scoring average and above average, compared with the national combined average of 77 percent. Tenth-grade reading, 65 percent; math, 71 percent.

Hawai'i Content and Performance Standards tests: Listed is the combined percentage of students meeting or exceeding state standards, and a comparison with the state average. Tenth-grade reading, 43 percent, compared with the state average of 42.8 percent; math, 13 percent, compared with state average of 18.4 percent.
