KALOPA
Ka'apahu Road will be closed for hillside work

Advertiser Staff

Ka'apahu Road in Kalopa will be closed Monday through Friday starting Jan. 28 while crews cut back 16 trees along the hillside and remove debris to prevent the embankment from collapsing.

The road will be closed each weekday from 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and motorists are asked to use alternate routes. The road is scheduled to reopen Feb. 6.

This is one of the ongoing earthquake repair projects. The Federal Emergency Management Agency will cover 75 percent of the $24,500 project, with the rest paid by the county.

In December 2006, crews cut down 21 other trees and remove large boulders to reopen the Kalopa Sand Gulch Roadway, which collapsed during the October 2006 earthquakes. The work forced nearly 100 area residents to make lengthy detours to get to and from their homes for more than two months.

For up-to-date information on the project, call the 24-hour hotline at 334-9559.
