Pearl City co-head coaches Frank Baumholtz III and Tracee Kono finally have their first O'ahu Interscholastic Association girls soccer title together.
And they had to beat their top rival last night to do so.
Meghan Fuller scored at 37:38 and Erika Kim Seu put in a rebound at 71:02 as Pearl City beat Mililani, 2-1, in the OIA Red Conference championship game at Kapolei.
Baumholtz and Kono were assistants when the Chargers won their previous league title in 2001. They took over as co-head coaches the following season.
"It's really overwhelming and very rewarding," Kono said. "It's all due to the kids. Basically, the hard work they've done from the beginning, from conditioning all the way through."
Fuller came off the field briefly at the end of the first half and needed to be reminded by the coaches to make aggressive runs toward the goal.
"I said, 'You're not making the runs, you're waiting for it to come to you. Don't do that. As soon as you see somebody wind up just make the run,' " Baumholtz said.
Fuller went right back in, made a run and received a perfect through ball from Tami Hashimoto that forced the Mililani goalie out. Fuller touched it past her and shot into an open net.
"(Hashimoto) knew where I was going," Fuller said. "I was coming from the left side, crossing over to the right. I had a gut feeling she was going to get it to me. She knew I was going through so I thank her for getting it there for me."
Fuller added: "I'm grateful I listened to my coach."
Kim Seu made it 2-0 after scoring on a rebound after a save by the Trojans goalie.
"I was just watching where the ball was going," Kim Seu said. "I just kicked it back in."
Chelsea Miyake scored at 74:03 to bring Mililani within one, but Pearl City held on in the final minutes.
West champion Pearl City (14-0-1) finished with six shots on goals, while West runner-up Mililani (11-4) had four.
Mililani had won the league title four of the past five years.
In two previous meetings this season, Pearl City edged Mililani, 1-0, behind goals by Fuller.
"This was the game that really counted," Baumholtz said. "There have been a number of times when we had to play Mililani five times in one year. For these kids to beat them three times in a row, that's really quite an accomplishment."
Pearl City, Mililani, Kaiser, Kalani, Moanalua and Kapolei will represent the league at the JN Automotive Division I State Championships, Jan. 30 to Feb. 2, at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Park.
"We'll regroup and in the state playoffs we're going to be in top form," said Mililani coach Ray Akiona.
