Surfing. It's a native thing - Native Hawaiian, that is. But Lee Tonouchi, the Kapi'olani Community College language arts teacher better known as Da Pidgin Guerrilla, was surprised to learn some students thought Californians were the first to ride the waves. So he made surfing the theme of the next KCC literary magazine, available free now on campus racks. "Get Surf" will be introduced at 7 p.m. Feb. 1 in a reading and launch party at Native Books/Na Mea at Ward Warehouse. The 44-page glossy includes an interview with Pohaku Stone, who teaches a history-of-surfing course at KCC, an introduction to up-and-coming surfer Drew Irons, poetry, prose and artwork. Information: Tonouchi, 366-1272, hybolics@lava.net.

FINAL WORD
"My parents are very supportive of me. And they know I'm a teenager, and yes, kids do stupid things sometimes. It's very unfortunate because with the Internet these days, you don't have a personal life."
