Punahou's Kameron Steinhoff makes it difficult for 'Iolani's Pablo Warner to get off a shot. Steinhoff scored 14 while Warner had 27.

In a stunning display as the state's No. 1-ranked boys basketball team again, Punahou blitzed past No. 2 'Iolani, 70-49, last night before a raucous home crowd of about 1,600 at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.

The Buffanblu, who took over the No. 1 spot from the Raiders in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 6-1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. 'Iolani fell to 5-2 after one of its worst losses to a Hawai'i opponent in the past eight years.

The victory also avenged a heartbreaking 43-41 loss to the Raiders on Jan. 4, in which 'Iolani's Taylor Mounts scored the winning basket on a putback as time expired.

"Coach (Dan Hale) had a pregame meeting and he made us visualize that whole last play again," said Punahou junior forward Manti Te'o, who scored 11 of his team-high 15 points off the bench in the first half to lead the Buffanblu to a commanding 36-21 lead at the break. "He told us to remember the way we lost and how we felt, so we were using that loss last time as motivation."

After the Raiders took an early 6-4 lead last night, Te'o scored on a layup with 4:43 remaining in the first period to spark an 11-2 run. In the second period, Punahou burned the nets by making 9 of 13 field goals, including 5 of 6 from 3-point range.

'Iolani forward Pablo Warner swished a 3-pointer from the corner while being fouled, and his rare four-point play closed the Raiders to 27-19 with 3:01 left in the half. But Te'o answered with a layup, and capped a 9-2 run to end the period on another layup with eight seconds remaining.

Te'o, along with guards Dalton Hilliard and Robbie Toma (six second-quarter points each) helped the Buffanblu continue their surge despite leading scorer Kameron Steinhoff being sent to the bench with his second foul early in the period.

"These games test our depth, but we're nine or 10 (players) strong," Hale said. "When you have that kind of depth, you can really get after it."

'Iolani could get no closer in the second half, and the lead grew to as much as 50-27 late in the third period.

"We couldn't stop them," Raiders coach Mark Mugiishi said. "It's hard to beat them when they're playing like that."
