Punahou tops Kamehameha

Overcoming Kamehameha guard Kawika Lyons' stunning first-half 3-point barrage, Punahou raced past the Warriors, 60-49, last night to remain in first place atop the Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys basketball standings.
A boisterous crowd of about 750 at Hemmeter Fieldhouse watched the Buffanblu — ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media — improve to 7-1 in the ILH. Fourth-ranked Kamehameha fell to 5-2.
It was Punahou's third victory over a top-6 team in the past six days, with earlier home wins over No. 2 'Iolani on Tuesday and No. 6 Saint Louis on Saturday.
"It feels good to get all three victories," said Buffanblu senior forward Kameron Steinhoff, who scored nine of his 13 points in the decisive second half. "It's been tiring, but we still have one more game on Saturday (vs. Mid-Pacific)."
Punahou finished the first period last night with a 12-3 run and looked to be in control with a 21-12 lead entering the second.
But the slender, left-handed Lyons swished the first of four straight 3-pointers with 4:27 remaining in the half, and by the time he was done, the Warriors were up, 29-26, with 1:45 left.
Robbie Toma answered with his own 3-pointer to tie it, but Blake Viena gave Kamehameha its last lead at 30-29 with 27 seconds remaining. Manti Te'o scored on a layup with four seconds left to put the Buffanblu up for good at 31-30.
Lyons finished the half with 20 points, including six 3-pointers.
"He was shooting us out of the gym," Punahou coach Dan Hale said. "At halftime, we just told our guys to settle down, stay on him, and have somebody else shoot it if we can. We had to, or else he was going to set a new ILH record."
The Buffanblu again were hampered when Steinhoff — their leading scorer — was saddled with his second foul at the 2:56 mark of the first period and sat out the remainder of the half.
But he started the second half strong with two quick baskets, and scored another layup midway through the third quarter to give Punahou a 41-32 lead.
The Warriors closed it to 43-38 after Brandon Dumlao's two free throws with 24 seconds remaining in the period, but the Buffanblu opened the fourth quarter with six straight points and Kamehameha could get no closer than nine the rest of the way.
