Roosevelt has gone from one of the final boys soccer teams to qualify for the 12-team bracket to the tournament final.
Leslie Nwapa scored in the 25th minute off a free kick from Keenan Seguancia and Kevin Leong added another in the 42nd as Roosevelt beat 'Aiea, 2-1, last night in the semifinals of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Boys Red Conference championships at Kailua.
Roosevelt, the East's No. 5 team, entered the tournament with a 5-5-2 record. The Rough Riders have won three matches in as many days, beating West No. 4 Leilehua, East champion Castle and West runner-up 'Aiea.
"We're just finally coming together and putting everything together right now," said Roosevelt coach Ed Ota.
Roosevelt (8-5-2) will play West champion and host Mililani in tomorrow's final at 6:30 p.m. Mililani beat Moanalua, 2-1, in last night's first semifinal.
Roosevelt last won an OIA boys soccer title in 1979.
"At first, I don't think anybody took us seriously," Nwapa said. "We just flew under the radar so to say. Now we're in the championship game and it's all good."
Nwapa was carted off the field in the 66th minute after injuring his right ankle while clearing an 'Aiea corner kick. He didn't return, but said "I think I can go" in tomorrow's final.
Roosevelt's first goal was set up after Rommel Delfino was fouled 25 yards out on the right side. Seguancia bent his free kick to the edge of the 6-yard box and Nwapa got past the defense and knocked it in.
"I just tried to get at the end of it and I did," Nwapa said. "I just happened to poke it in. It wasn't much, but it was enough."
Roosevelt made it 2-0 on Leong's first goal of the season. The freshman settled the ball on the left side of the penalty box, dribbled through traffic and shot into the top right corner.
"I was just surprised. I called for the ball and just shot it," he said.
'Aiea's Ricky Itagaki made it 2-1 in the 45th minute by blasting a shot from 20 yards off the right post and into the net.
'Aiea (7-4-3) had a chance to score in the 78th minute when Jaren Iwane was fouled about a foot outside the penalty box. The free kick went off the wall.
"They played real tough defense on us and we had all the chances in the world, we just couldn't get that second one," said 'Aiea coach Jon Shirafuji.
The four semifinalists already qualified for the JN Automotive Group state tournament Feb. 6 to 9 at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Complex. Kaiser and Castle, who both won matches yesterday, also will represent the OIA.
MILILANI 2, MOANALUA 1
Mililani is back in the OIA tournament final.
Colin Lund had an assist and scored the go-ahead goal in the 69th minute as West champion Mililani beat Moanalua in the OIA Red semifinals last night at Kailua.
Last season, Mililani (12-1-1) had its five-year league title run snapped and didn't even qualify for the state tournament.
"It feels good since last year we were taken out of it early (in the OIA tournament) and we didn't make it to states," Lund said.
Lund scored from 8 yards out after receiving Ryan Wert's short pass from the right side.
Mililani's Alex Gustafson scored in the 7th minute off a throw-in by Lund from the right side.
Moanalua, the East's No. 6 team, tied it in the 59th minute on a penalty kick by Justin Watanabe, who placed his kick to the bottom right corner of the goal.
The play was set up after a handball in the penalty box was called against the Trojans.
"A lot of luck and a lot of referees on the sideline helped that out," said Moanalua assistant coach Isaac Holbron.
Moanalua (6-7-2) will play host 'Aiea for third today at 7 p.m.
