Fugitive in home invasion case caught

Advertiser Staff

Big Island police arrested a 28-year-old man who was being sought in connection with a home invasion robbery in Hawaiian Acres in November.

Detectives acting on a tip from the public served an arrest warrant on Brandon Lani at about 8:30 a.m yesterday at a home in the Orchidland subdivision. The warrant stemmed from drug charges unrelated to the robbery.

Lani was found hiding in a closet, and allegedly resisted arrest, police said. He was taken into custody after being shocked with a Taser, police said.

A 26-year-old woman at the home was arrested on suspicion of hindering prosecution and first-degree terroristic threatening after she allegedly threatened one of the investigating officers.

The woman was being held at the Hilo police cellblock pending further investigation. Lani was also being held at the Hilo cellblock in lieu of $50,000 bail in connection with the warrant.

Police were still seeking 22-year-old Darren Joao in connection with the home invasion, and have received unconfirmed reports that Joao has been seen in Na'alehu and Puna.

The victims in the home invasion reported that three to five men entered a Hawaiian Acres home on Road 5 on Nov. 24, and demanded "specific property" that police have declined to identify. One of the men wore a mask, and two brandished firearms.

When the three men and a girl who were in the home were unable to produce the item, the robbers forced them out of the house and into a car. The girl was later taken from the car and sexually assaulted.

The victims were later released, and the robbers left.

Police ask anyone with information about Joao's location to call Detective Reed Mahuna at 961-2384 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.
