Jr. 'Bows sink HBA, 54-44

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Victor Jube's 3-pointer from the top of the key with 3:49 remaining started University High on a 10-0 run to finish the game last night as the Junior Rainbows held off Hawai'i Baptist, 54-44, in a showdown between two unbeaten Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II teams.

A vocal Homecoming crowd of about 850 at HBA watched UHS improve to 6-0 in league play, while the Eagles fell to 6-1.

The Jr. 'Bows jumped out to leads of 5-0 and 14-5 in the first period, but Hawai'i Baptist clawed back and closed it to 30-26 on Dayne Kato's 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer.

The Eagles eventually tied it at 44-44 after a three-point play by center Kyle Barretta with 6:41 remaining, but that would be the last points HBA would score.

"Defense — that's what I've been preaching all year long and the guys finally bought into it," said University High coach Walter Quitan. "Our offense was super hot in the first half, but I told them that we gotta get stops in the second half because (the Eagles) were hitting 3-pointers, too."

The Jr. 'Bows clamped down in the final six-plus minutes with an aggressive man-to-man defense with some traps mixed in.

Noah Chong-Viernes scored a game-high 16 points to lead UHS.
