Superior speed, precision and skill last night helped the Mililani boys soccer team win something that went missing last season: a league title.

Colin Lund scored in the 9th minute and Robert Uemoto in the 47th as host Mililani beat Roosevelt, 2-0, in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Boys Red Conference soccer final.

"It feels great. It's a real honor," said Mililani coach Jeff Yamamoto. "It's a huge accomplishment to take the OIA. There are a lot of great teams."

It was Mililani's sixth league title in seven years. Kapolei won the crown last season and Mililani didn't even qualify for the state tournament.

Lund found the top right corner of the net after a run down the left side. Alex Gustafson started the play with a throw-in.

"It was a good throw down the side," Lund said.

Added Yamamoto of Lund: "He's a force. He's physically strong, he's fast. Deceivingly fast."

Uemoto blasted in a shot from 22 yards on the right side that deflected off the goalkeeper and trickled into the goal. He said he took two touches starting from around midfield to get the ball in place.

"I wasn't even thinking. I just reacted kind of," Uemoto said. "I saw it going right at the keeper. It went through and I was like, 'all right.' "

Things could have been worse for Roosevelt, the East's No. 5 team, but Mililani (13-1-1) had a header go off the post in the 33rd minute and missed a penalty kick in the 39th.

Mililani, the West champion, beat East No. 4 Kalaheo and East No. 6 Moanalua in the tournament.

Mililani, Roosevelt, Moanalua, 'Aiea, Kaiser and Castle will represent the OIA at the JN Automotive State Division I Boys State Championships Feb. 6 to 9 at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Complex.

Yamamoto wanted to give special recognition to tactical coach Steve McGehee and conditioning coach Ian Hasegawa with helping the Trojans get this far.

Roosevelt (8-6-2) had been the "Cinderella" of the tournament, having beaten West No. 4 Leilehua, East champion Castle and West runner-up 'Aiea.

Roosevelt coach Ed Ota declined comment after the match.
