'Hawaii's Latino Idol' begins

The search for the second annual "Hawai'i's Latino Idol" is under way. Prospects must be of Hispanic or Latino descent and perform in Spanish — and be 18 and older. The deadline to apply is Feb. 29.
The winner will receive $1,000 and a chance to record a CD. The idol will appear at various Hispanic events throughout the year. To enter, call Alma Latina Productions at 285-0072 or e-mail almalatin1@aol.com. Contestants may also sign up at "La Zona Latina," from 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday, at Panama Hattie's, 98-061 Kamehameha Highway, in 'Aiea.

WORK THE RED CARPET
The Hawaii International Film Festival is throwing a party to let supporters experience the excitement of the 80th Academy Awards, Feb. 24 at the Halekulani hotel.
The Oscar Night America party benefits HIFF. Buy tickets, $225 or a table starting at $2,250 by calling 373-9911 or e-mailing oscar@hiff.org. Guests will watch the awards on large screens courtesy of ABC affiliate KITV after walking down a red carpet at the Halekulani. A six-course meal with wine pairings and Oscar-themed martinis are also part of the festivities.
