University of Hawai'i senior center Tanya Smith was named Western Athletic Conference women's basketball player of the week after helping the Rainbow Wahine to a split last week.

This is Smith's third WAC honor this season.

Smith, a native of Sydney, Australia, tied the WAC record with 25 rebounds against Idaho on Saturday and a career-high 25 points against Boise State on Thursday.

Against Idaho she managed 14 points, and had 17 rebounds against Boise State.

The 25 rebounds was the most in a WAC regular-season game and tied the overall mark set by Cheryl Ford of Louisiana Tech in 2003.

Smith currently leads the WAC in rebounding at 12.3 boards per game. She currently ranks second in the nation in rebounding.

Hawai'i returns to action Thursday when it faces New Mexico State in Las Cruces.

AWARDS

UH RANKED 45TH

The University of Hawai'i ranks 45th among 178 Division I schools nationally in the U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup final fall standings, the school announced yesterday.

UH is the highest-ranked Western Athletic Conference member in the final standings, which measures performance in eight fall sports. Last year, UH was 62nd.

UH garnered points in football (57), women's soccer (25), and women's volleyball (50).

The three teams all won WAC championships this season. Both the soccer and volleyball programs advanced to their respective NCAA Tournaments, while the football team participated in the Allstate Sugar Bowl and earned points for finishing the season ranked 17th nationally.

California topped the fall standings with 370 points followed by Southern California (343), Stanford (315), Oregon (304) and Penn State (303).

VOLLEYBALL

HAWAI'I STILL AT NO. 13

The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team remained 13th in the latest College Sports Television/American Volleyball Coaches Association poll released yesterday.

The 3-4 Warriors took two matches from 2-5 UC San Diego last week and play at unranked UC Santa Barbara Friday and Saturday.

KANEKO JOINS WIE

Ayaka Kaneko, a 17-year-old student at Sacred Hearts Academy in Honolulu, has received an exemption to play in The Fields Open next month at Ko Olina.

Kaneko joins 18-year-old Stanford freshman Michelle Wie, who accepted a sponsor's exemption.

The Fields Open is the second event on the LPGA Tour schedule and will be played Feb. 21-23.

Kaneko advanced to the quarterfinals of last year's U.S Women's Amateur Public Links and finished second in the U.S. Girls Jr. Championship. She also competed in the 2006 U.S. Women's Open.

Wie and Kaneko could be joined by two other teenagers from O'ahu.

Stephanie Kono, 18, and Cyd Okino, 14, will try to Monday qualify for the Fields Open.
