Big Island police have initiated a coroner's inquest case in connection with a Kona man who disappeared Saturday while picking 'opihi at Kamilo Point in Ka'u.

Divers on Sunday recovered shorts, an 'opihi bag and human remains with what appeared to be shark bite marks, police said.

Fire Capt. Greg Kane said divers were dropped into waters in the area by helicopter. Kane said the shoreline consists of cliff faces 30 to 40 feet high with open ocean waves that constantly break on the cliffs.

Police have not positively linked the human remains to the missing man. An autopsy is scheduled.

Nathan Labarios, 58, of Kainaliu, was reported missing at 4:45 p.m. Saturday by friends he was camping with at Kamilo Point, about five miles from South Point, police said. They reported they had last seen him about 11 a.m. before he left to pick 'opihi alone.
