OMAHA, Neb. — Katie Hoff has locked up her third Olympic race, setting an American record while winning the 200-meter freestyle at the U.S. swimming trials.
Hoff, who was set to swim the 200 individual medley final later Wednesday, won the freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 55.88 seconds. She broke her own American mark of 1:56.08, set in February, but fell short of Laure Manaudou's all-time best of 1:55.52 at last year's world championships.
Hoff posted the fastest time in the world this year but had to hold off Allison Schmitt, who claimed the expected second Olympic spot at 1:55.92.
