Work on the north-bound side of the Fort Weaver Road widening project will resume Monday, and there will be a contraflow lane heading out of 'Ewa starting Wednesday.

Complaints from 'Ewa Beach residents frustrated with the additional traffic tie-ups created by the project prompted the state Department of Transportation to halt work temporarily on the north-bound side about three weeks ago until a solution could be found.

Improvements on the south-bound side of the street have continued uninterrupted.

In the coming week:

  • On Monday and Tuesday only, there will be left-lane closures between Laulaunui Street and Renton Road in the south-bound direction from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and in the north-bound direction from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  • Wednesday through Friday, there will be single lane closures from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in both directions in the vicinity of the Old Fort Weaver Road intersection. One north-bound lane will be contraflowed using one southbound lane. That will mean two north-bound lanes and only one south-bound lane will be available during construction hours.

The project is designed to widen Fort Weaver, the primary artery into 'Ewa Beach, from four lanes to six. This second phase of the project is expected to run through mid-2009. About 80 percent of the $59.85 million cost is being funded with federal dollars while 20 percent is coming from the state.

Motorists are advised to use caution while driving through the area and to allow for extra travel time.
