Major Maui repaving project to begin on Monday

Advertiser Staff

KAHULUI — The heavy school traffic associated with both Kahului School and Maui High School is not expected to be affected by a repaving project that begins Monday, Maui Department of Public Works officials said.

The $895,494 project, contracted with Maui Paving, will repair a portion of Hina Avenue from Niihau Street to Molokai Akau Street. The work includes excavating the existing pavement, installing a glassphalt base course and asphalt concrete and adjusting manholes.

The estimated completion date is Sept. 2, but the bulk of the work that will cause noise and traffic disruptions is expected to be completed prior to the beginning of school at the end of July.

Some of the remaining work, which will be scheduled to avoid peak school traffic hours, may require alternating lanes of traffic. Also, due to the removal and re-installation of traffic sensors, signals may be modified during construction to function on a timed mode rather than on demand.

Motorists are asked to use caution and to follow all traffic control signs, delineation devices and flag persons when driving through the work zones.
