AlohaCare seeking scholarship applicants

Advertiser Staff

AlohaCare is seeking recipients statewide for its annual AlohaCare Believes in Me Scholarship program. The program provides low-income students with funds to attend the University of Hawai'i and Hawai'i community colleges.

Since the scholarship program was launched in 2003, AlohaCare has awarded 150-plus students with more than $200,000. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $2,500 per student. The deadline to apply is Aug. 1.

The criteria for AlohaCare's scholarship award are:

  • Must be a Hawai'i resident;

  • Must be admitted to any campus within the UH system;

  • Enrolled as a full- or part-time classified graduate or undergraduate student;

  • Able to demonstrate financial need.

    To help address the healthcare shortage in rural areas, preferences will be given to students from a Neighbor Island and/or graduates from a Neighbor Island high school. Special consideration will also be given to students pursuing studies in healthcare or health-related fields.

    To obtain scholarship applications, go to www.hawaii.edu/admissions/aid.html. Or from O'ahu, call 973-0571. Neighbor Island residents can call 800-434-1002. For questions, e-mail Rachel Mark at rmark@alohacarehawaii.org.

    According to a news release, AlohaCare is Hawai'i's third largest health plan serving more than 58,000 health plan members statewide with 7,200 members on Maui, 2,000 on Moloka'i and 340 on Lana'i.
