A man in his late 20s or early 30s was critically injured after the vehicle he was driving slammed into a utility pole near the "S" curve on Kaukonahua Road near Wahiawa.

Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department, said paramedics were sent out on the call at 3:04 a.m.

The driver initially appeared to be in serious condition, but his condition worsened as he was being transported to the hospital, Cheplic said.

Police closed the road for about 90 minutes while fallen electrical wires were being repaired.
