Hit-run suspect free pending tests

A 27-year-old man arrested early Thursday in the investigation of a hit-and-run accident in Hale'iwa that left a pedestrian with critical injuries was released yesterday pending further investigation.

Police were awaiting lab test results on the suspect's blood- alcohol level before pursuing charges of first-degree negligent injury, failure to render aid, and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.

Police said the male victim, 18, of Wahiawa was playing on the roadway when he was struck by a 2003 Toyota on Kamehameha Highway, 230 feet south of Pohaku Loa Road at 11:37 p.m. Wednesday. The victim was taken in critical condition to The Queen's Medical Center.

The suspect drove away from the scene but was arrested about a mile away at 12:15 a.m. Thursday.
'EWA BEACH MAN WAS VICTIM IN FALL
The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office yesterday identified a man killed in an apparent industrial accident Thursday at Halawa Industrial Park as Herbert Lato, 68, of 'Ewa Beach.
Lato fell about 40 feet after going through the roof of a building in the 99-100 block of Waiua Place at 9:40 a.m.
Police said the man was helping with roof repairs, lost his balance and fell.
PEDESTRIAN STRUCK ON KAILUA ROAD
A male pedestrian suffered critical injuries last night after being struck by a vehicle near a 7-Eleven at 1247 Kailua Road, police said.
The incident was reported at 9:11 p.m.
The man was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, said city Emergency Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic.
Police vehicular homicide investigators were dispatched to the scene.
INTERNET SUSPECT POSTS $50K BAIL
A 29-year-old Kalihi man charged with first-degree electronic enticement of a child was released Thursday after posting $50,000 bail.
Jun Baloaloa Tumacder of an Ashford Street address was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly showed up for a sexual encounter set up on the Internet with an agent posing as a 14-year-old girl.
He was arrested by investigators with the Hawai'i Internet Crimes Against Children task force at Zippy's Restaurant in Pearl City.
Under a new Hawai'i law passed May 16, intent to commit a felony sex offense, agreeing to meet a minor or undercover police officer posing as a minor, and/or traveling to a meeting place is punishable by up to 10 years in prison for adults.
KAHALU'U HOME DAMAGED BY FIRE
A Kahalu'u home was damaged yesterday in a morning fire.
The fire at 47-280 'Ahuimanu Road was reported at 6:20 a.m., and firefighters had it under control by 7 a.m. Damage was estimated at $85,000, and the cause is under investigation, said Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig.
There were no injuries.
Authorities at 11 a.m. Thursday had raided the home and arrested four men on suspicion of third-degree promoting of a dangerous drug and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Frank Iokewe Ryder IV, 25, and Beau C.P.K. Salis, 21, were being held last night at the main police station cellblock on outstanding warrants. Ryder has seven warrants totaling $13,175 while Salis' five warrants total $55,000.
The two others who were arrested on the drug offenses are ages 41 and 28, police said.
SUSPECTS SOUGHT IN LYCHEE THEFT
Big Island police are asking for the public's help in finding two men wanted for questioning in connection with an agricultural theft.
An employee of a farm on Milo Street in Kea'au encountered two men on the farm about 5:30 p.m. on June 21, a news release said. The men were carrying lychee and equipment for picking it.
Photos of the suspects were taken before they left the scene, the release said. The men were later identified as Nester Balicoco, 44, and James Tinao, 52, both of Puna, police said.

PUNA WOMAN HELD IN SEX-ASSAULT CASE
Big Island police have charged a 28-year-old Puna woman with second-degree hindering of prosecution in connection with the reported sexual assault of a female minor on the morning of June 22 in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision of lower Puna.
Police said Nohealani Cabarloc of Puna was charged late Thursday afternoon after she allegedly made false statements to Big Island police detectives investigating an acquaintance, Mauro Martin Ortiz, an individual police are seeking in connection with the sexual assault.
Cabarloc is being held at the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $500 bail pending her initial court appearance scheduled for Monday afternoon in South Hilo District Court, a news release said.
Detectives are still looking for Ortiz. He is described as 5 feet 6, about 180 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair.
Police caution the public against approaching him, and advise anyone to call police if they see Ortiz.
Detectives assigned to the Police Department's Juvenile Aid Section are continuing the investigation.
