Tennis: Hanescu edges Karlovic at Swiss Open

GSTAAD, Switzerland — Victor Hanescu reached the quarterfinals of the Swiss Open by rallying past third-seeded Ivo Karlovic 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3), 7-6 (11) today.
The 27-year-old Romanian, ranked 80th, will face Jeremy Chardy of France in the clay-court event.
Chardy also needed three sets with tiebreakers in his victory over Dominik Meffert of Germany, winning 6-7 (1), 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4).
Fourth-seeded Mikhail Youzhny of Russia defeated Flavio Cipolla of Italy 6-3, 6-2, and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain advanced when Nicolas Kiefer of Germany withdrew.
