Isle author wins Weisenthal award
By Wanda A. Adams
Honolulu resident Ellie Crowe's book, "Duke, Surfer of the Century," has received the Asian/Pacific Award for Children's Picture Books for 2008 and will receive the Simon Weisenthal 2008 Award in November. Crowe's book was included on the Book List: Best Children's Books of 2007 compiled by the Children's Book Committee and was a Kiriyama Prize Notable Children's Book of the Year as well as receiving other awards. See www.elliecrowe.com.
If you can't make it to the Maui Writers Conference which, confusingly, is on O'ahu this year, Aug. 29-Sept. 1, you can catch it online. A new subscription Web site, the Maui Writers Conference Online, is at mauiwriters .com. Subscriptions are $19.95 a month or $99 for six months. The site will archive material from previous conferences and also offer streaming video from this year's conference, as well as downloadable podcasts.
Summer reading programs are under way for both children and adults at many local libraries. Check at your local library.
The Friends of the Library book sale, June 23 to July 6, netted more than $201,000, slightly above last year's total revenue. Attendance was about 15,000 people.
