The body of a Lanikai resident missing since June 30 was found yesterday below the Pali Lookout.

Investigators from the police missing persons unit and medical examiner's office identified the body as Steven Thomas, 36, the millionaire founder of an Internet software security company.

Firefighters were called to assist police with a body retrieval at 1:30 p.m., said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Frank Johnson. The decomposing body was found by three hikers yesterday on the windward side of the Pali tunnel. Firefighters hiked down and brought the body up to Pali Highway at 3:30 p.m.

The case is classified as an unattended death and is being investigated by the missing persons unit. An autopsy is scheduled for today.

Thomas was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in April, and was anxious about the poor performance of his investment portfolio as well as discussions about moving back to Colorado full time, his wife, Candis Burton Thomas, said last week.

Candis Thomas said she and her husband, who controlled a fortune estimated at $50 million, were scheduled to return to their summer home in Boulder, Colo., on June 27. The couple also owns a home on Mokulua Drive in Lanikai.

On June 26, Steven Thomas, creator of Webroot Software — the company that created the Spy Sweeper and Window Washer programs — packed a suitcase and said he was going to stay with his mother and cousin at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani Hotel. Thomas was last seen June 30 at the Waikiki hotel.

Before his bipolar disorder diagnosis, Candis Thomas said last week, Thomas was a "totally normal, happy" guy who loved fishing, hiking and other outdoor activities.

Steven Thomas was arrested April 27 and taken to Castle Medical Center after he ran naked into a race/walk event in front of his home in Lanikai.

He was upset about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and claimed aliens and the government were out to get him, his wife said. He had also reportedly refused medication and medical attention.

In 1997, Thomas and his then-girlfriend, Kristen Talley, founded Webroot in Boulder, according to a December 2004 article in Business Week. Thomas wrote a program that cleaned up Microsoft Windows downloads while helping the program run faster. The pair sold their stake for $108 million in December 2004.

Thomas' twin brother, Kevin Thomas, said last week that his brother split the proceeds with Talley, then parted ways with her and bought the Lanikai home in 2005.
