NEWARK, N.J. — New York Red Bulls midfielder Claudio Reyna is retiring.
Today's announcement comes less than two seasons after the former United States captain returned from Europe to join Major League Soccer.
The New Jersey native turns 35 on Sunday and has been bothered by hamstring and back injuries this season. He has not played since May 25 and has no goals or assists in 461 minutes this season.
Reyna represented the U.S. in four World Cups and two Olympics.
Reyna played with Bayer Leverkusen and Wolfsburg in Germany, Glasgow Rangers in Scotland and Sunderland in England before joining Manchester City in 2003. He retired from international soccer after the 2006 World Cup.
