LIHU'E
Asing will be sworn in as Kauai mayor today

Bill "Kaipo" Asing will be sworn in as mayor of Kaua'i today.

Asing, the Kaua'i County Council chairman, will step down from that position before taking the mayor's seat, according to a county release.

Last week, Asing was appointed unanimously by his six fellow council members to serve as mayor until a fall special election fills the mayor's job for the next two years. The vacancy was created by the June 22 death of Mayor Bryan Baptiste.

Asing's swearing-in ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. in the rotunda of the Moikeha Building at the Lihu'e Civic Center.

Baptiste's administrative assistant, Gary Heu, has been serving as acting mayor.
