MOVIE SCENE
Old musicals on big screen

Advertiser Staff

There was a time when Hollywood really was a dream factory, when studios churned out big, beautiful musicals with sumptuous sets, award-winning music and beloved movie stars - just the ticket to escape your everyday woes.

Get the full effect on the big screen at the Doris Duke Theatre, Honolulu Academy of Arts, which hosts the film series "Gotta Sing, Gotta Dance: Classic American Movie Musicals" beginning Sunday. Tickets are $7 general; $6 seniors, students and military; $5 museum members; $3 for kids 11 and younger.

The films:

  • "The Gang's All Here" (1943, 103 minutes; directed by Busby Berkeley)

Vintage-film fans know the name Busby Berkeley means glittery, over-the-top extravaganzas, and "The Gang's" is no exception. Alice Faye stars as a wartime chorus girl whose soldier-boy boyfriend seems to be engaged to another. Carmen Miranda is a scene stealer in "The Lady in the Tutti-Frutti Hat." All in color-saturated Technicolor.

The theater also is having a costume contest at the 7:30 p.m. Sunday screening for all you diva types - Carmen, Ethel, you know who you are. The winner receives four free passes to the theater. Info: 532-3033.
