  • The board of trustees of Maui Preparatory Academy recently announced that the academy has been accredited by the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools and the Western Association of Schools & Colleges.

    The school began working toward accreditation in 2006, shortly after the start of its second year in operation. An accreditation committee reviewed the school's self-study report, visited classes and talked with administrators, students, faculty, staff, parents and trustees.

  • Gov. Linda Lingle and the Hawai'i Commission for National and Community Service will honor the achievements of volunteers across the state with the Governor's Volunteer Recognition Awards in October.

    The commission is asking individuals and groups to nominate deserving people or organizations for their significant service during the 2007 calendar year.

    Nominations are due by Aug. 8 and the winners will be announced at an Oct. 17 banquet at the Ala Moana Hotel.

  • Michael Carr, a former banker and a leader in the visitor and nonprofit industries, is the new president and chief operating officer of the Battleship Missouri Memorial.

    Carr will work with the memorial's volunteer board of directors to oversee and administer the continuing refurbishment of the battleship and its operation as a private, nonprofit historical attraction in Pearl Harbor.

    Carr joins the Missouri from the Bank of Hawaii, where he served as vice president of family wealth management.

  • The University of Hawai'i Regents Medal for Excellence in Research has been awarded to three people for 2008. They are Benjamin Brooks, an associate researcher at the Hawai'i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology; Terry Hunt, a professor of anthropology; and R. Brent Tully, an astronomer at the Institute for Astronomy.

    The award recognizes scholarly contributions that expand the boundaries of knowledge and enrich the lives of students.
