Residents plan protest of RimPac military exercise
Residents will be outside Bellows Air Force Station tomorrow to protest military training being conducted there.
Normally open to the public on the weekends, Bellows is closed for Rim of the Pacific exercises from today until Monday.
"We oppose the use of our land for urban warfare training," said Mabel Ann Spencer, a member of the Restoration Advisory Board for the base.
But the issue is about more than just being able to use the beach on the weekend, she said. It's about being Native Hawaiian and waiting for homeland while the military uses ceded land for training, about having the highest rates of diabetes and cancer and about funding for military housing when Hawaiians go without.
"There is an imbalance in decisions made here in the islands," she said. "We feel the need to stand up and protest."
