Andy Irons, Boyer inducted into Hall

Hawai'i surfers Andy Irons and Lynn Boyer were inducted into the Surfing Walk of Fame yesterday at Huntington Beach, Calif.

Irons was selected in the "Surf Champion" category. He won several national championships as an amateur, and then won the professional world title in 2002, '03 and '04.

Irons, who is from Hanalei, Kaua'i, is also a five-time winner of the prestigious Triple Crown of Surfing championship.

Boyer was selected in the "Woman of the Year" category. She was the women's world champion in 1978 and '79.

Boyer, who was raised on O'ahu's North Shore, was considered one of the best female big-wave surfers in the 1970s and '80s.

Irons and Boyer were among six inductees yesterday. It was the 15th class to be inducted.

Other Hawai'i surfers selected in previous years include Duke Kahanamoku, George Downing, Rabbit Kekai, Buffalo Keaulana, Eddie Aikau, Gerry Lopez, Rell Sunn and Margo Oberg.

UEMURA'S LONGBOARD CLASSIC THIS WEEKEND

More than 200 surfers are expected to participate in China Uemura's 24th Annual Longboard Surfing Classic this weekend at Kuhio Beach, Waikiki.

The pro-am division is scheduled to run today, with the age-group amateur divisions set for tomorrow and Sunday.

The contest is run by former longboard surfing national champion China Uemura and his family. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Most of the state's top longboard surfers are expected to compete in the pro-am division, including Bonga Perkins, Duane DeSoto, Kai Sallas and Kekoa Uemura.

ISLE SURFERS INVITED TO SOUTH AFRICA EVENT

Hawai'i surfers Mark Healey, Jamie Sterling and Ian Walsh are among the 24 surfers invited to participate in the Red Bull Big Wave Africa contest.

The event can run only on a day when wave-face heights are 40 feet or higher at Hout Bay, South Africa.

The holding period for the contest starts today and runs through Aug. 31.

STEWART SEVENTH AT BODYBOARDING EVENT

Mike Stewart of Kailua, Kona, tied for seventh place at the Human Shark Island Challenge last week at Shark Island, Australia.

Stewart was eliminated in the semifinals.

Australia's Ben Player won the contest and moved into the No. 1 ranking on the 2008 world tour.

The Shark Island Challenge was the third of 11 stops on the tour.

Jeff Hubbard is the top Hawai'i competitor at No. 10. Stewart is No. 16.
