Baseball: Dragons cut player whose hard slide preceded brawl

Associated Press

DAYTON, Ohio — The Dayton Dragons released infielder Angel Cabrera, whose hard slide helped raise tensions before an on-field brawl with the Peoria Chiefs broke out in a game last week.

The Dragons, a Cincinnati Reds' Class A minor-league club, cut the 22-year-old player today because Cabrera's behavior has been an ongoing problem, manager Donnie Scott said.

Cabrera elbowed the Chiefs' first baseman in an earlier game, then slid hard into second base after being hit by a pitch Thursday night. Soon after that play, there was a confrontation between managers, followed by a bench-clearing melee.

Cabrera had been the third player hit in the game, which was still in the first inning.

On Sunday night, Cabrera threw his helmet in the dugout. The helmet bounced and hit pitching coach Doug Bair in the leg.

"We were trying to help this kid with his conduct out there," Scott said. "It didn't work out. He's not a bad kid, but he needs to channel his aggression in a positive manner."

Midwest League president George Spelius said Monday he's still reviewing video and other information about the brawl before deciding what action to take.

Umpires ejected 15 players and the teams' managers after the 10-minute brawl ended, but the teams protested the ejections by phone to Spelius, saying they didn't want to have to use pitchers in the outfield to finish the game. After an hour delay, the players who were ejected were allowed to return to play. Dayton won 6-5.

Chiefs pitcher Julio Castillo faces a felonious assault charge after a fan was hit in the forehead by a thrown baseball during the brawl. The Chiefs are an affiliate of the Chicago Cubs.
