LUCERNE, Switzerland — China sent a strong message to the rowing world Sunday that it will be a force at the Beijing Olympics.
Chinese crews won five of the 14 finals — including four of the six women's boat classes — in a World Cup regatta at Lake Rotsee.
Canada and the United States were next best with two gold medals apiece.
The U.S. men's quadruple sculls delivered an upset in beating three-time word champion Poland and the second American gold came from the women's eight.
Women's pair You Wu and Yulan Gao of China followed a World Cup win in Munich, Germany, last month with a four-second margin over the two U.S. crews.
World champions Qin Li and Liang Tian won the women's double sculls, while the Chinese women's quadruple sculls crew surged over the final quarter of the 2,000-meter course to leave the U.S. and Great Britain trailing.
China's only men's win came in the lightweight fours, holding off Denmark and France by less than a boat's length.
New Zealand's Rob Waddell marked his comeback after eight years away from international competition by partnering Nathan Cohen to victory in the men's double sculls.
Both Canadian gold medals were earned by the men's team.
Its world champion eights crew led all the way, while Scott Franden and Dave Calder also led from the start in the men's pairs.
The third and final World Cup regatta is June 20-22 in Poznan, Poland, with final placings counting toward seeding in Beijing.
